SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD (1978)

Another of the fine tradition of Italian Cannibal flicks....This one has all of the usual traits such as nudity, animal cruelty, natural violence and of course cannibalism. I find this one to be one of the more watchable of the genre, it doesn't have the same violent extremity as say Cannibal Holocaust but still weighs in fairly heavily on the depravity scale and would have been rather graphic at the time. This one was one of the earlier films of the genre basically after Man from Deep River (1972).

The film itself revolves around Susan (played by Ursula Andress, the bond girl from Dr No) with her team of trekkers and guides going into Papua New Guinea to find her missing husband, they endure the usual hardships of going into the jungle, evading predatory animals, and the natives whilst witnessing some strange rituals and customs of the indigenous folk of the country. Having Ursula Andress in this film gave this film an air of credibility and nobody is acting above their abilities an there's nothing too corny, and you don't feel like you're watching a  film that is trying to be offensive for the sake of it.

Overall it moved well and I found it quite entertaining and if you're thinking of getting into the cannibal genre this is as good a place as any to start. Definitely worth checking out of you can find a copy of this... If you can't (and its a hard one to find)... here's a streaming version of it ….

NOTE: My DVD of this isn't that very sharp as far as picture quality goes so I'm not sure if I got a VHS transfer or the film. My DVD is missing some of the footage you may as well watch it here AND this version  to has what is a more complete version with more of the gruesome / explicit content included

EATEN ALIVE (1980)

Another one from the vault of politically incorrect over the top exploitation flicks from the late 70s/early 80's. Directed by Italian director Umberto Lenzi, also responsible for Man from Deep River (widely regarded as responsible for starting up the Cannibal film genre and featuring a few of the same actors as this film) and Cannibal Ferox after this film

Basically this one follows the story of a wealthy cotton farm heiress, Sheila who is investigating the disappearance of her older sister suspecting that she may have become involved in a strange religious cult in jungles of Asia (New Guinea). She then heads off to find out what has become of her sister. Along the way she partners up with Mark, an ex Vietnam vet for protection before making her journey through the savage and cruel jungle. After an eventful run through the jungles she finds her sister in a settlement/commune type set up run by cult leader Jonas, which is of course surrounded by cannibals and dangerous animals.

The usual assortment of gore, animal killings, ritual sacrifice, nudity, primitive and violet rituals and of course cannibalism one would hope to see when watching a film like this are present to make this a pretty confronting but entertaining watch. Shot in the same grizzly reality style as other films in the genre,  it does not have quite the same feel as Cannibal Holocaust, but this will pretty much appeal to anyone  who liked that film. Probably not quite at the same level of extremity but not far off either, it holds it own in terms of gore thats for sure. Probably not recommended for the easily offended or those new to the horror genre. This is some pretty full on stuff, its sleazy and filled with atrocity after atrocity and would have been one of the most extreme movies ever committed to film at the time. Either way its a solid watch and defs worth the time to watch it.

This is the second time I've watched this and was able to absorb it a little better than the first time I watched and reviewed this film a few years back. One detail I missed the first time round was the amount of animal deaths, ie: animals eating and preying on each other. It really paints the jungle as a violent place and sets the tone for the violence of humans to not seem out of place in the jungle.

I've managed to find a version on you tube that looks reasonably sharp if you want to check it out for yourself

CANNIBAL FEROX / MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY (1981)

Cannibal Ferox reviewed at http://www.gorenography.comAnother in a long list of Cannibal / Exploitation films.... Again this one is fairly high on the gore scale and sits in a similar place to Cannibal Holocaust.

The plot this time revolves around two female university students who venture into the south american jungle one of whom is writing a thesis attempting to disprove the 'myth' that there are cannibal tribes in south America. Whilst there they meet up with two other westerners Mike and Joe. Whilst Joe seems alright, Mike is a cocaine addicted sadist and has already garnered the wrath of the local indian tribes after butchering a male tribe member. Mike is the kind of asshole that you just can't wait to be eaten,

Eventually the natives have had a gutful (no pun intended) of the white folk who've now killed a couple of their tribes people and attempted to rip them off for the gem wealth the region contains and begin to hunt the white folk and eat them in suitably gory and disgusting fashion

Over all this is a pretty cool flick, but I'm a bit of a sucker for the cannibal genre so there is a little bias in there... Again if you're new to the genre this along with Cannibal Holocaust are as suitable points as any to entre the genre. As far as the gore content goes I'd say its not as extreme as Cannibal Holocaust but not to far off either. Whilst I'm not entirely sure of the history of this film the cover says it was banned in 31 countries and there's a neat warning before the film starts warning us of its extremity. Obviously this is at the more extreme end of horror and probably best not for the faint hearted the easily offended or those new to the horror genre. Enjoy!!

LOST CANNIBAL WORLD (1977)

Directed by Ruggero Deodato (Later responsible for bringing us all Cannibal Holocaust) Lost Cannibal World aslo known as Ultimo Mondo Cannibale follows the misfortunes of a group of prospectors who's plane goes down in the jungle. Not sure exactly where they went down (possibly Indonesia / PNG / Phillipinnes) but either way they find themselves in a world of pain when they realise they've gone down in a jungle inhabited by cannibals. The groups pilot and assistant are killed by natives and remaining members are caputured by natives.

The gore you'd expect from the creator of Cannibal Holocaust is all too present in some horrific scenes, tho not as intense as Cannibal Holocaust .... Again it's not for the faint of heart or those offended by nudity.

Shot in the same style of the Cannibal movies at the time this is raw and confronting and the gore is very realistic. All in all a cool watch and is more or less a precursor to the Cannibal Holocaust movie, and has a very similar feel, and would appeal to the same crowd of people.

Someone has been kind enough to upload the entire movie onto Youtube so for your viewing pleasure here's the full version!

EAT (2014)

Eat 2014 reviewed at http://www.gorenography.comWell.... This is certainly a different take on the horror genre, sitting somewhere between a drama and horror flick (with some moments of extreme gore) this is a very interesting watch indeed.

The film itself focus in on a young lady Novella who is trying to make it in the world of acting, she's just hit her 30's, hasn't had a role in years and has run out of money and at the point  of eviction.....  basically life is slipping out of the grip of miss Novella at a rapid rate, stress takes its hold and she develops a nervous habit of chewing and then eating herself... As I mentioned above the movie is more like a drama, but obviously dealing with the subject matter the film has plenty of moments of what I'd call reasonably extreme gore, this isn't for the faint hearted or the new comer to horror genre. The horror effects are very well done and the movie is shot in very high resolution so it has a particularly hard impact on the viewer as well.

Its safe to assume this film was done on a budget but its still a riveting watch, not loosing my attention for the whole of the film, and the way the story develops its quite a believable story, making the viewer really feel for Novella, even though many of her own life choices have led her to this point in her life. I wouldn't call this film a classic of the horror genre but it is a fresh and fairly unique take on the genre and definitely something worth horror fans checking out at least once.....

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980)

This now legendary icon of cinematic gore, was originally released in 1980 or sometime around then, this movie was from what I hear banned in more places than it was allowed to be shown. I have to say it's one of the more extreme films ever created in terms of gore and violence for both its time and even now, it still manages to curdle the blood.

Based on the story of a group of journalists who have some footage of collegues who have gone missing in the south american jungle they too venture in after them to research the indigenous tribes and figure out what happened to their friends. They end up making complete assholes of themselves instead and incur the anger of the local cannibal population.

There has been some speculation as to wether or not gore scenes in this film are real and Italian director Reggero Deodato even got arrested on obscenity charges and then later released upon further investigation. Either way the budget filming techniques and realistic violence and sadism really to make this one seem pretty realistic. Sadism and cruelty abound. This is not one for the faint hearted as scenes of real animal violence and some graphic rape scenes really push the boundaries

Different people will have different opinions on this film. If you're a horror fan its worth watching, but I don't think its the most outsanding film ever. By the time the film is done you're left feeling almost beaten up and worn out. It has some interesting social commentary as well on the how far civilised man has or hasn't progressed.

Anyway the film is back on youtube so check it out below before it gets taken down (as it has before on this blog)

BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS (1976)

This is one of the more extreme horror flicks in the genre, there's pretty much something in it to offend anyone, constant full frontal nudity (including beaver shots) all manner of torture and dismemberments ,explicit gore and one very creepy midget...  this film has it all!!! Its firmly rooted in the B Grade category, though it does have a solid enough plot for what it is, it is essentially the first torture porn movie.

Was this film intended to just push the boundaries of censorship or provide something more? Id say its nothing more than a gore fest but it does do that well, though it seems to have mostly negative reviews I actually didn't mind it and found myself watching it fairly intently until the end.

Plot wise it centres around the circus director / S and M master Sardhu who is running an underground live show which features nudity and torture which the audience think is fake, unknowingly they are watching people get tortured and killed right in front of them. Sardhu is seeking artistic recognition for his shows from one critic in particular who thinks the show is purile garbage (and rightly so) so he of course captures him and totures him along with the many females (who of course have no clothes on) he has stored away in his dungeons under the theatre. While most of the females are fairly anonymous he does capture one beautiful ballerina who is missed by both her boyfriend and the private investigator who start poking around the macabre theatre ... needless to say this is where i'll stop divulging the plot and let you guys see how it ends for yourself

Gore wise it would have set new standards for offensive-ness and outright crudeness .... but be thankful it was done on B grade 1976 technology, though someone did point out to me that the gore did look more full on when played on  VHS player so maybe the high def digital version does expose a few flaws in the rather primitave gore effects...  the gore does look a little like red paint if you know what I mean... I shudder to think how grim this film would be if it was remade today

Anyway I think it was a cool watch but definitely not for those who are new to the horror scene or offended by female nudity (or today's sensibilities in regards to sexism) so don't watch it around your Mom!

DIARY OF A CANNIBAL (2006)

Diary of a Cannibal - reviewed at http://www.gorenography.comI have to say this is a pretty 'out there' concept for a film. It centres around a young couple that meet on the internet and fall in love. The male in the relationship obviously has some deep psychological issues and need for love (probably attributable to his mother) and Noelle the female still isn't right after the death of her father in her childhood, so I guess between the two of them and their mental malfunctions, the pair make a well matched couple.  At some point he asks his new found lady love to kill him and eat him. She of course refuses but later reconsiders and agrees to his request.

This film starts out a little slow with a series of flash backs with a badly injured Noelle being interrogated by the police about the grizzly death. And works backwards from there. It's a novel way to tell a tale I guess, but honestly it gets a bit boring and confusing not long into the movie. A lot of random footage and blurry flash back vision make this rather painful to watch. It watches kind of like a dream sequence / home made snuff film, maybe that was the intent? I'm not really sure. Plot wise its a little thin, and I've more or less disclosed the whole story anyway

I will go as far as to say it doesn't seem to follow any logical sequence at all, and many of the sequences are repeated..... maybe it is intended to be watched on drugs? If someone reading this wants to get really wasted and watch this one and report back to me if makes more sense on mind altering substances I'd like some feedback on that. I'm not sure what the director of this was aiming for but for me it fell short of the mark, well short, which is  a shame because it is a fairly morbid concept behind the film and I think had it been done a little better could have been something quite...  well not excellent, but at least a lot more captivating.

Overall it doesn't suck too bad, but the movie itself is a tale of squandered potential.....

THE GREEN INFERNO (2015)

The Green Inferno - http://www.gorenography.comI didn't know what to make of this at first as I'd heard it was going to be a remake of the legendary "Cannibal Holocaust" from 1980. The film started off with a completely different premise so after the first half an hour I'd written this off to misinformation and had mentally adjusted myself to the fact that it was infact a different movie... besides what would they have to gain by recreating one of the filthiest, goriest, most disturbing movies ever?

The story starts on campus where a bunch of freshman students get railroaded by campus shitbag,  Alejrando into going to South America to save some forests. `After some substantial complications the mission eventually succeeds and the group head out of the forest only to have the plane come crashing down not that far away in cannibal country........

A lucky few of the groups die early in the plane crash leaving the rest of the group to be systematically persued, captured and consumed by the locals

With modern video capture techniques the gore and violence is so confronting I'm actually glad this wasn't a remake of "Cannibal Holocaust" .... definition aside, the violence is not in the same league as "Cannibal Holocaust" but the impact it has puts it right up there. It would still consider this extreme gore but had it descended into the same levels of filth as "Cannibal..." I think I would have lost my lunch... especially as I wasn't feeling the best when I put the movie on

As a standalone movie it holds up very well, plot makes sense and the acting is convincing there's nothing really too wrong with this, infact its pretty good! One thing I liked was the way director Eli Roth made the natives seem rather friendly and down to earth it was really hard to hate them (even as they salted the freshly dismembered corpses of the students) they came across as very human which again like "Cannibal..." raised some interesting moral issues in my head

Definatley worth a viewing!
